Glutton = Excessive eater
Gluttony = Habitual greed or excess in eating
Opening:
In today’s world most people don’t view “over eating” or “obesity” as a sin. Too many sins are being normalized in today’s world & it’s time for our eyes to be opened to the truth. People have become greedy & ungrateful. We take all we possibly can without giving thanks to God. We spend more time talking to the Fast food drive-through worker than we do talking to Jesus. We want large amounts of food, but don’t want to pay for it, oh yeah, & we want it RIGHT NOW! We are greedy on amount, money, & time. Yet, the time we save is never spent wisely, never spent with God in prayer or in His word. No instead, we rush off to the next place trying to fill the empty feeling inside we can’t shake, the void in our hearts which God can only fill.
Today’s world is full of so many sins that appear in all types & forms. Some sins aren’t as noticeable as others or are viewed as less important, but all sins are equal in God’s eye. Each sin needs to be forgiven for.
Study:
Prov 23:20-21 “& do not be with heavy drinkers of alcohol, or with gluttonous eaters of food; for the heavy drinker & the glutton will come to poverty, & drowsiness will clothe one with rags.”
• ‘do not be with’ ~ do not hangout with, approve of their actions, or encourage/aid in this behavior.
Prov 28:7 “He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but he who is a companion of gluttons humiliates his father.”
• Over eating is a sin. That’s a fact.
• Gluttony is just as much a sin as anything else. People try to talk it down by saying, “I’m just eating food, I’m not hurting anyone.”, but God wants our bodies healthy & strong. He wants us to be in good physical shape so that we can do His work. If you are 600 lbs & can’t even walk on your own or take care of yourself how are you going to do God’s Will? How are you going to help others? How are you going to fulfill the purpose God has for you? You can’t. What ever the purpose God gave you is, I guarantee it can’t be fulfilled from stuffing yourself with food.
• God will never approve of us laying around & wasting our life away that He gave us. We are suppose to be serving & working for God always.
Prov 23:2 “& put a knife to your throat if you are a man of great appetite.
• ‘Great appetite’ ~ Gluttony
John 6:27 “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
• Don’t go to work just for the paycheck to be able to put food on the table.
• Don’t do good things or difficult tasks at your job only to please your boss, so as to not get fired.
• Only fear God, not your boss.
• Your boss isn’t the one who gave you that job, God is the one who blessed you with the job.
• In everything you do, at work or home, do to please God!
• He will always provide what is best for you.
John 6:35 “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will not hunger, & whoever believes in Me will never thirst.”
• Jesus is the only thing we need to survive.
• God controls everything & will do anything that needs to be done for His people & His plan.
• If God told us to start walking across a barren desert with no; food, water, protection, appropriate gear/clothing, or any other people; would you trust that God is bigger than all of those things? Would you trust the God who was able to speak you into existence along with everything else would also be able to get you to the other side of that desert safely?
• Not only would God get you to the other side alive, but He would also allow you to come out healthier & stronger than you could of done on your own by eating food of man.
• The bread of life (Jesus) is all we need.
Matt 4:4 “Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
• You can over eat, under eat, or eat just the right amount of food.
• At the end of the day every single person on this earth still needs to “eat” & fill themselves with the word of God.
• If you choose not to eat any of God’s Word & live by it you are starving your soul into spiritual starvation, eternal death, & eternal separation from God.
1 Cor 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
• If you are following God’s Will for your life & obeying His instructions you can be confident in your actions.
Prov 25:16 “Hast thou found honey? Eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, & vomit it.”
• Basically this is saying, if you find something good (If God gives us something good) that He wants us to enjoy it & take as much as we need, BUT if we become greedy & take more than we need it will become bad for us. It will become a sickness, a disease that will eat away at us & progressively get worse.
• God wants us to enjoy our life.
• He wants us to be blessed & taken care of.
• But He does not want us to take things for granted OR become greedy over things.
• If God blesses us with a great meal each day He wants us to rejoice & give thanks.
• He does not want us to desire food & other things so much that instead of being servants of God, we become servants to the worldly things we crave.
Matt 6:25 “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, & the body more than clothing?”
Closing:
There is so many things we could do instead of this sin. We could give food to the hungry. We could use the money we would of spent on food that we didn’t need to make a donation to someone or help someone in need. Instead of eating out of boredom we could use that time to pray & fill our spirit with God’s word.
P.S.
I just want to add a little side note. I am by no means judging anyone! Jesus loves all & calls us christians to love all! He created each of us the specific way He wanted us so we could fulfill the plans that He has specifically for us. This bible study is not aimed at people with any circumstances they may not be able to control. Jesus has a specific plan for everyone. The purpose of this study is to only bring light to the true word of Christ & sins that can sometimes go undetected, but lead to sins that can be very noticeable & damaging.

GIRL!! this is SO GOOD!! You had my attention as you wrote, “We spend more time talking to the Fast food drive-through worker than we do talking to Jesus.” PREACH!! this is such a good statement bc sometime I will read my Bible for twenty or so minutes in the morning and think that’s good! I spend more time driving to me job than this, and I should realize that twenty minutes is NOTHING compared to what God has blessed me with. Just like you said, gluttony not only applies to physical food but it also applies to becoming such a consumer in this world. We, even as Christians, sometimes tend to take and take without giving back. It is so important to be grateful for the things we are given, but also return the love to others around us!!! Rather than being consumed with physical food, we should be consumed with SPIRITUAL FOOD!!
